Dear Friend,
I love writing to you.
Wherever I am on my journey is always made more romantic by the simple fact that I am writing about it. It gives me perspective and allows me to get a bird's-eye view — albeit with a few blind spots, which I happily make up for with a little visioning and fantasy.
My journey has become one of answering a call. I jumped off a cliff, and in effect I'm still falling. But I'm falling gracefully, like a brave swallow diver trusting the water will meet me.
So what's coming next?
I've looked at camper vans, Eurail passes, Costa Rica, Colombia, and even Asia, but so far nothing has landed. I haven't received my next instruction yet, which probably means I don't have all the information I need.
I've realised I need a purpose for going somewhere.
Later this month I'm heading to North Wales with my dear comedy writing partner, Ali Khan. We're disappearing into a writing room to create a comedy video proposal for the Institute for Addiction Research in San Diego.
The vision is ambitious: to help them secure funding for a six-city comedy tour and a series of short films designed to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction and increase the urgency of funding addiction research.
This project has quietly become deeply personal to me. I have lost friends to addiction. And as someone in recovery myself, it blows my mind how little we still know. I am one of the lucky few who found a solution through twelve-step recovery — but so many fall through the cracks. We lose millions of people globally every year to alcohol and drug use, and the vast majority never receive treatment. This particular tour focuses on women's addiction and recovery — a group who face enormous barriers to getting help. I know the shame that surrounds addiction. The stigma is massive. And I would happily spend my entire life helping to break it down so more people can find their way through.
I don't know exactly where this path is taking me, but I do know it's leading me back to the US of A.
I just don't know which route I'll take — or what beautiful detours are waiting for me along the way.
So, for now...
